The most important concentration of Borreby types is in Denmark and its surrounding territories but Borreby individuals may also be found in Germany and the southern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The Anglo-Saxons and Vikings brought this type to the British Isles. |
|
Compared with other UPs, Borreby types are slightly reduced, and perhaps their origin could be traced to a reduction of Phalians. The orbits are more rounded and the type is smaller by all dimensions if compared with Phalians or Bruenns. The face often has a somewhat “comic” aspect to it, it is not as bony as is the case with the two other types, and is more rounded. Borreby types can be said to resemble Alpines (especially central European Alpines) in some regards. |

Borreby types are relatively unreduced UPs commonest in Denmark and southern Scandinavia. The type is somewhat reduced and smaller if compared with Phalians or Bruenns and comparable in some regards to Alpines. Its name was coined by Carleton Coon because he believed the type to be representative of crania found in the Danish village of Borreby. |

Phalian + reduction= Borreby types |

|
By both population distribution and by morphological similarity, it is quite likely that Borreby types are derived from reducing Phalians. Coon never mentioned a separate Phalian type and some of his Borreby examples could have been classified as Phalian. Below are compared Phalians on the left to Borreby types on the right. In general, it will be seen that Phalians appear to have more prominent noses and fuller features, and being Borreby types partly reduced, this reminds the basic differences between UP survivors. |
